At 107 years old, Apo Whang-Od is the world’s oldest tattoo artist
Whang-Od is from the Philippines and is also the oldest person to be featured on the cover of Vogue, appearing in the April 2023 issue of Vogue Philippines.
Known as the last mambabatok, or traditional Kalinga tattoo artist, Whang-Od has been practicing the hand-tapping technique since her teens, using tools like bamboo sticks and thorns. Her tattoos, once reserved for Butbut tribe warriors, now attract international visitors seeking her signature geometric designs.
